Was just out and chatting with Sangeetha Sarma today after work and us being nurses, we obviously talk about doctors, nurses and patients we work with. Anyways it's always good chatting with her, especially today since she nicely transfered her patient from her ward to me...
So we were saying that wouldn't it be nice if all doctors were more appreciative of nurses...seriously, most doctors just give us a whole lot of orders. Of course, being a nurse, you obviously have to carry out their orders...but what I'm trying to say is, can they not just do only that? It would be really great if they said a simple thank you.
I remember some time last month, on a particular morning, I was so crazily busy and there was just so much to do and we didn't have enough staff and it was a Saturday (now who says Saturdays aren't busy days? It's unpredictable in High Dependency). So anyways, I didn't get to go for my break the whole shift...I had two patients for lumbar punture that morning (lumbar puncture is a procedure where a patient is sedated and a needle is inserted into the spine of the patient and brain fluid is collected to send for some lab tests), and send one for a scan, one for another procedure...
Anyways having one lumbar puncture in a shift is bad enough...but two within a shift? I was almost going crazy...well, it felt like it. I honestly wanted to cry and was praying so hard that God would make everything go smoothly (I was so scared one of them would actually collapse during the procedure then we have to code blue the patient and resuscitate and all those stuff that make my hands shake =P).
But you know, having a nice doctor around makes all the difference to your crazy day...after the final lumbar puncture, I was just exhausted and really really hungry and was just dying to sit down, and in dire need of a good massage. And then the nice doctor says, "Thank you, staff nurse". You know, I felt like wow, finally someone is being appreciative of what nurses do.
It was just a simple thank you...but it was the most most mostest encouraging thing I heard that morning, instead of hearing the doctors bark more orders at us. Honestly, some of them need to learn more manners. Sheesh.
Okie that's enough of ranting...gosh, did I really type that much? Gee.....hehehehh =P Sorry lah, I just had another tiring day =P
